Rulers are the common tools in our daily life and you can use the edge of a ruler as a guide in drawing straight lines. Since there are two main types of rulers in our life, compared with the metric ruler, the interpretation of an English Ruler is different. Here will introduce you the way to read an English Ruler.
English Ruler
1), Count the number of marks between each number, remembering that the numbers represent inches and the smaller marks are fractions of those inches. Note that English rulers may have eight marks or 16 marks between each inch, but the latter is more common.
2), Look for the three longest marks between two inches. These represent the measurements of fourths: 1/4, 2/4 (or 1/2) and 3/4. Look for the next smallest marks, which represent measurements of eighths: 1/8, 3/8, 5/8 and 7/8. Look for the smallest eight marks, which represent measurements of sixteenths: 1/16, 3/16, 5/16, 7/16, 9/16, 11/16, 13/16 and 15/16.
3), Read an English ruler by looking for the whole number preceding the measurement, and then counting the fractional tick marks, identifying what that measurement is by the sizes specified in Step 2. Leave the answer in fractional form or use a calculator to convert the number to decimal form. For example, a measurement past the 3-inch line and on the third smallest line would be 3 and 5/16 inches, which also equals 3.3125.

A ruler is a straight-edged instrument, often made of plastic or wood, which is designed as a guide in drawing straight lines and measuring small increments. There are two majoy types of rulers: the metric ruler and the English ruler. Metric rulers come in millimeters and centimetres, with numbers appearing on the centimeter marks, while English rulers come in inches, with numbers appearing on the inch marks. Here are some instructions on interpreting a metric ruler.
Instructions
Metric Ruler
1), Count the number of marks between the numbers, remembering that the numbers on a metric ruler represent centimeters. Note that there are 10 millimeter marks between each centimeter mark.
2), Look for the slightly longer millimeter mark in the center of the millimeter marks. This represents the halfway point between the centimeter preceding and the centimeter following.
3), Read the metric ruler by looking for the preceding centimeter, counting the millimeters and using the millimeter as a decimal. For example, a mark four spots after 3 would read 3 centimeters, 4 millimeters---or 3.4 centimeters.

Quilt rulers are designed for rotary cutting, for the rulers are made of thick plastic, there will be measurements on the rulers. If you will use the quilt ruler, you should practice for serveral times to be used to using it.
More Instructions
1), Place the ruler on a flat surface in front of you. Find the numbers marked on the surface of the ruler.
2), Read the measurements on your ruler. Inch marks will likely be made by solid lines down the length and width of the ruler. Fractions may look like shorter lines that lessen in length as they decrease in numerical value. Expect to find fractional increments of 1/2 inch, 1/4 inch and 1/8 inch. Some manufacturers instead create grids over the surface of the ruler.
3), Use the markings to line up fabric for cutting. Most quilt rulers have numbers placed so they can be read from the left-hand edge or the right-hand edge, to accommodate left-handed or right-handed cutting. To make a 2 5/8-inch cut, for example, find the 2-inch mark and then move to the 5/8-inch mark after the 2, and line up the edge of your fabric at that spot.

When we are designing patterns, we will usually use a ruler to draw even, identical elements. So if you want to draw a pattern design with equal parts, you can try to use a ruler to delicatedly design elements in your design. You can draw triangles or squares in any size if you like. Also you can play with your children to draw pictures by using a ruler and help them draw straight lines, which is also very interesting. Here are some tips for you to follow when drawing patterns with a ruler.
Instructions
1), Put your piece of craft paper in a vertical line on your workspace.
2), Put your ruler across the top of the paper so that about an inch of the paper is showing on top.
3), Put your pencil against the ruler and draw a line from 1 to 3 inches, from 5 to 7 inches, and from 9 to 11 inches.
4), Move your ruler down the page about an inch and repeat the same process of drawing a line from 1 to 3 inches, from 5 to 7 inches, and from 9 to 11 inches.
5), Line the ruler up to these two set of lines by placing the ruler vertically between the lines. Draw a line on either side of each set of lines so that you can link the lines and form a square or rectangle pattern across your page.
After your first drawing, then you can have a look to find out the shortcomings which will help you improve your drawing in your next practice.
